Our Philosophy:

As Black LGBTQ folx, and LGBTQ People of the Global Majority, reclaiming our bodies as something to be loved, celebrated, and pleasured often feels like a luxury that is well beyond our reach. Society, faith communities, and even our loved ones have told us it is inappropriate to relish experiences that have no outcome other than our delight. “Hustle and grind” culture tells us that if we ain’t making money or making moves, we are wasting time. And social media constantly perpetuates that we have not made it “enough” to enjoy life yet.

But that is not living. That is not freedom.

In the book Pleasure Activism by Adrienne Maree Brown, she says, “pleasure is a measure of freedom.” And the Let’s Get Back To Queer team believes that to be true. Pleasure is not a luxury; it is our birthright. And by pleasure, we mean anything that brings you joy and satisfaction, which includes sex, but is also so much more. For us, the inverse of pleasure is stigma and shame because it disconnects us from ourselves and prevents us from living full lives.

Over here, we’re strong advocates for Black queer and trans folks utilizing joy and feeling good as that north star in our sky that guides and helps create a satisfiable life. Despite the bullshit the world tries to pile on us, despite our trauma, shame, or feelings of unworthiness. That is pleasure as liberation.

So what does pleasure as liberation look like? For us, it looks like a world without classism, sexism or racism. It looks like the end of homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, xenophobia and every other phobia that impacts the wellbeing of people. Pleasure as liberation looks like living in a world where we remove the constraints of systemic injustice so that we can all be free in our flesh to live our best possible lives.

Everyone deserves to live a pleasure-centered life. Especially Black LGBTQ identified folx.
